Subject: Money Dilemma

Hey Molly

Lately I’ve been trying to be more intentional with my money and where it’s going - especially with everything going on around the world. It doesn’t sit right with me to think that my super or investments could be supporting weapons manufacturers or companies involved in conflict, especially in regions where people are already suffering through humanitarian crises.

I really want to make sure my money is doing good, or at the very least, not causing harm. Is there a way to check which super funds or investment options are more ethical or values-aligned?

Thanks x

Molly's Response:

Totally fair concern and you're not alone I’ve actually had this question a few times with poeple wanting their money to do good while doing well.

Here’s how to check if your investments or super fund are aligned with your values:

1. Check your super fund’s investment options
Jump onto your super fund’s website and look for their ESG, ethical, or sustainable investment options. These portfolios aim to avoid industries like weapons, tobacco, fossil fuels, and more, but the level of ‘ethical’ varies between funds, so...

2. Use tools like Responsible Returns
This free site (by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia) helps you search for super funds and investment products based on your values —l- like avoiding armaments, gambling, or fossil fuels.

3. Ask the hard questions
Contact your fund or provider directly. Ask:

Do you invest in weapons manufacturers or defence contractors?

What negative screens do you apply (i.e., industries you exclude)?

Do you publish your holdings?

4. Consider ethical ETFs or micro-investing platforms
Platforms - but always check what’s actually in them.

5. Be aware of “greenwashing”
Just because it says “ethical” doesn’t mean it’s 100% values-aligned. Dig into the fine print and look for independent certifications or transparency reports.

Your money has power. The more we ask questions and make conscious choices, the more pressure there is on the industry to lift their ethical game.
